RATA
Elevating Indigenous voices for decolonisation
About RATA
Rata Communications is a media platform dedicated to platforming Indigenous voices and sharing important communications that are often ignored by mainstream outlets. Mainstream media outlets fail to report on the real issues we face, uphold the colonial narrative, and reinforce the illegal occupation of this land. We need to platform our voices, our stories and our truth. Rata aims to provide a platform where Indigenous stories are told by community for community. Rata aims to connect Pacific Indigenous struggles and promote sovereign liberation.
Rata was founded by prominent Indigenous activist, Wayne (Coco) Wharton in his fight for justice, truth and self-determination for all Indigenous people.
The word Rata means '“smoke” in Zenadth Kes (the Torres Strait). Inspired by the traditional practice of using smoke signals to communicate important messages, Uncle Coco states: “It connects us to our ancestors who used smoke to alert people to danger, and that’s what we aim to do today."
